Hello there music people or people who want to be music people! First things first - WHO THE HELL ARE WE? We are Blair Clark & Ron Pope & we co-founded Brooklyn Basement Records. Before that, Ron was a totally independent artist for 10 years (technically he still is independent) & Blair was his manager. Together we were able to grow his career to a place unprecedented by independent artists (2 million singles sold, 200 million Spotify plays, sold out tours all over the world, etc) - all without help from any of the industry's biggest players. So what are we doing here & why do we think we are equipped to give advice?
Advice by the Slice is going to be a weekly blog giving independent/growing artists small pieces of advice on the industry and what it takes to create a sustainable and respectable career. Through growing Ron’s career from baby-sized part time gig to a successful independent full-time thing with millions of streams, sold out tours, and living as a mostly full grown adult, we get questions all the time about how to “make it.” As in, “how do I play music and not need to sell pants or coffee to support myself?” We’re here to try to help! We’ve definitely been through the ringer and while some lessons can only be learned through first hand experience, we hope that some of our blunders will help you avoid at least a few nights of wishing you went to law school instead. Full disclosure: We are not experts and there is no formula. Nor is there a shortcut. However, these are things we’ve tried along the way and have proven to be positive for us. Why one piece of advice weekly? Well, we often feel like throwing a whole lot of advice/opinions at someone makes them want to crawl in a hole and say goodbye to the music industry forever, so this feels a little more manageable. Also, by the slice pizza joints are the best spots on earth, so this is also our tribute to those guys. So, here’s to a year’s worth of tricks to try and slices of pie.
We’ll kick things off Monday, January 2nd & post once weekly every Monday after that. We’ll also try to get to questions when we can, so send them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
